How You Can Help
Breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty can be next to impossible without the proper guidance and support. The hurdles are many, and the obstacles are great.
McAuley Village is a leader in providing homeless single mothers with the tools they need to become self-sufficient. The only program of its kind in Rhode Island, the Village consistently outperforms similar programs across the country. Last year alone, 96 percent of our residents moved into permanent, self-sustaining housing. We credit our success to our robust offerings and requirements. All mothers must improve their educational level from GED to college or training, and we offer McAuley Works (a job-readiness training program with on-site internships), Early Head Start/Head Start Child Care, Parenting Skills, Financial Literacy, Healthy Lifestyle, and Computer Proficiency workshops.
Making the journey from homelessness to long-term family stability requires more than shelter. The root causes of homelessness; poverty, low educational achievement, and limited job skills are often accompanied by trauma involving family separation, emotional distress, and other challenges. McAuley Village provides the stable environment where “Safe Passages” to long-term permanency begins.
New arrivals to the Village find clean apartments ready for occupancy, and a 24-hour staffed security program keeps families safe from those who might threaten their pursuit of stability. “Safe Passages” provides the next step, tackling the individual circumstances of family homelessness over a 24-month period. The goal of the program is to heal, strengthen, nourish and equip parents for independent living that keeps children safe and families together over a lifetime. All Village moms are required to work or enroll in school, and all pay a portion of their rent while residing at the Village.
Through the “Safe Passages” program, Village families are sponsored for a period of 6 or 12 months, and provided with family-building services that help them move beyond the issues that held them back and towards independent and productive lives. Sponsors are offered volunteer opportunities to witness first-hand the difference their generosity is making. A year-long sponsorship for a “Safe Passages” family is $3,500, and a six-month sponsorship is $1,750.
In addition to effecting real change through supporting “Safe Passages,” your sponsorship includes invitations to special events such as Wednesday Night Dinner, Education Night, and Graduation. You will also receive quarterly updates on your family’s progress as you play a vital role in their movement out of poverty.
