SUPPORT THE ARTS

DEVELOPING THE CREATIVE TALENTS OF McAULEY HOUSE GUESTS

From the Heart

Since 2007, McAuley House has shared the artwork created by its guests with the wider community in an annual art show titled, “From the Heart”, and features music, food, flowers, and the paintings, sketches and collages of McAuley House guests. All of the artwork is available for sale, with proceeds benefiting both the artists and the McAuley House Art Program.

The show is always free and open to the public!

“From the Heart” grew out of an art class founded in 2006 by Kathy King, a clinical social worker, expressive arts therapist and artist. Kathy continues to run the McAuley House Art Program, working weekly with our guests who face addiction, poverty, mental illness and homelessness to express themselves through the creation of beautiful works in the midst of their day-to-day struggles. She has been volunteering with the most vulnerable in our community across her South Side neighborhood for more than 20-years.

“From the Art” show is made possible thanks to a wide-range of sponsors and in-kind donors, including:

Blooming Mad Florist of Cranston
Brown University Dining Services
Community MusicWorks
Jamestown Community Farm
Johnson & Wales University
Pear Ink Design
Rhode Island State Council on the Arts
RISD Caters/Artisan Events
Solitro’s Bakery of Cranston
St. Paul’s Church Confirmation Program
Stop & Shop
Sysco Foods
Utrecht Art Supply

Art gives us the courage to move forward with our lives. The program started as an opportunity for guests of McAuley House to gather together on a weekly basis with a variety of art supplies available to engage in the creative process.

As an Expressive Arts therapist, it has been a privilege to be a witness to the healing power of art. I created this blog to share the art and stories of some of our artists and inspiring information. I hope you enjoy it!
