Gotta Have Sole

Jun 21, 2022

Richard Barrett, the patriarch of the Barrett family, was a long-standing volunteer at McAuley House. Throughout the 1980’s and until his passing in 2009, he dedicated countless hours to serving those in need at McAuley House with a warm smile on his face.

After his passing, a void was left behind in the hearts of his loved ones and the community he had served so selflessly. To honor his memory, an evergreen tree was planted in his memory just outside McAuley House, which he supported so faithfully. And, to continue his legacy of kindness, each year since 2009, as the holiday season approaches, the Barretts gather at McAuley House to light the Barrett Tree.  It has become a cherished tradition each year for the family and the community. This year, hot cocoa and cookies were served, and all sang holiday songs!

His children speak of being at McAuley House Christmas celebrations throughout their childhood. Each year, when buying their own family Christmas tree, they bought and delivered one to McAuley House, as well. Now, Richard Barrett’s son, Jonathan, serves on our Board of Trustees, and his daughter, Emily, serves on the Development Committee. Ben Barrett, Richard Barrett’s grandson, continues his grandfather’s legacy of service and support by collecting socks from his teachers and classmates at The Greene School, which he donated to McAuley House on the afternoon of the tree lighting event. McAuley House guests will be delighted to receive the comfort of Ben’s gift.

The glimmering tree in the McAuley House yard and the ongoing friendship and generosity of the Barrett Family serve as a reminder of love, hope, and the memory of Richard Barrett. If you would like to send a message to the Barrett family celebrating Richard Barrett’s memory, please send an email to donorservices@mcauleyri.org, and we will gladly pass your message along.
